The Katatonics formed in 2013 as a surf inspired instrumental trio, focusing heavy on giving traditional surf and rockabilly tones a fresh take. With short melody driven songs they created their unique sound utilizing an upright base and Fender Stratocasters. They take heavy influence from the tones of Shadowy Men on A Shadowy Planet, Man or Astroman, and Messer Chups. Combing their love for surf sounds with a raw rock n' roll edge. After some short touring, in 2015 Mike Morgan formerly from The Skeletonmen joined the group adding yet another unique dynamic with a classic rock and blues style riffs overlayed on the low end melodies and percussive resonance of the upright bass.
The band made several appearances on the local radio station WFHB's local live segment as well as continuing to tour the Midwest. In 2016 they released there first album with the current line up, SLAPBASSSURF! which was released as a limited run cassette tape. The following year they release Swamp Terror on 7" vinyl leading into another tour of the Midwest. In 2018 the momentum continued, releasing a split cassette tape on Failure Records with The Enstrangers out of Lafayette, IN as well as a digital album featuring new material, Operation Neptune. This led to leaving the Midwest on their next tour, ending in Manhattan at Otto's Shrunken Head. Since the beginning of 2019 they continue to do weekend tours and are currently writing their next album of all new material set to release on October 1st.
